Zubers come in many different sizes.

Meet the Zuber family. Top: Trenton, Matthew, and Chrissa. Middle: Katherine, Elise (mom), Duane (dad). Bottom: Grace, Ruthanne. Elise Zuber used to work as a child psychologist and Duane is a manager for many hotels scattered through Michigan. Together they have adopted four of their children.

Katherine Zuber, right, is Elise's blood daughter and was adopted by Duane when he married Elise. At 19 years old, she attends Grand Valley University and is studying child psychology. Here she is shown putting Matthew to bed.

Trenton Zuber, Duane and Elise's blood son, ponders what to do next in his "get well soon" card for his dad. Duane was severely dehydrated and hospitalized that night. The kids bonded together and made him some cards.

Matthew Zuber removes eight bottles of pills and vitamins that he must take daily. Matthew was exposed to drugs inutero. The Zubers originally had Matthew as a foster child, but then fought a long and hard custody battle for his rights, eventually winning and adopting him into their family. Matthew has been with the Zuber family since he was 2 weeks old.

Chrissa Zuber decorates an Easter egg on April 3, 2010. She was removed from her parents home when she was about 3. From there she was transferred to two other relatives houses, but neither worked out, thus her landing at the Zuber household. They finalized her adoption in June.

Grace and Ruthann Zuber were adopted a year ago from Ethiopia. Elise and Duane Zuber, along with their daughter Katherine got to fly down to Ethiopia to pick up the twins, and even got to meet their birth mother. She was giving them up for adoption because she simply could not afford to raise them.

The Zubers have a special place in their heart for Africa, as the twins are both from Ethiopia.

Elise Zuber, third in from the left, volunteer coaches an after school boys running program called Total Trek Quest (TTQ) at Roosevelt Elementary School in Zeeland, MI. They run every Tuesday and Thursday, and some of the boys are up to running a 5K."I hope that TTQ will help teach healthy running/exercise habits" stated Elise.

Matthew Zuber is enrolled, and very talented in, a gymnastics class. He attends every Tuesday morning. "We need to keep him interested in sports and other things now so that when he's older there is no chance of him getting involved in bad things. He had drugs in his system as a child and is more pron to them as an adult, so we try to keep him active and involved." explained Elise.

Elise, left, shows Grace how to decorate an Easter egg. The twins had never experienced decorating eggs.

With just one glance at the Zuber family calender, one can see that they are an active family. However, one can tell from a few visits that family is very important to them. Duane and Elise Zuber are wonderfully blessed people who are continually seeking to do God's will.

  1. Hostel rooms are comfortable but small. It’s best to travel light.
